It reads tokens and predicts the most likely next tokens (remember Part 1). If your prompt is short and vague, many different answers are “likely”, so you get a random one. If your prompt says who the answer is for, what to do, and what the result should look like, only a few answers fit, and you get one of those.

Prompt engineering is the skill of writing that input on purpose. It is not magic words or secret tricks. It is the same thing you do when you brief a new teammate: give them the background, a clear task, the format you need and an example of good work. Modern models follow instructions very well, so clear writing gives you most of the benefit.

Why developers should care: in an app, the same prompt runs thousands of times. A prompt that works “most of the time” in the chat window can break your JSON parser, confuse users or cost extra tokens in production. Small prompt fixes are often the cheapest way to improve an AI feature.

Anatomy of a good prompt

Almost every strong prompt is built from the same six building blocks. Because the template is a normal function, you can unit-test it, store versions in Git and reuse it across features.

Five simple prompt patterns every developer should know

1. Persona“You are a strict but friendly code reviewer.” Sets expertise and tone in one line.

2. Step by step“First list the facts, then compare them, then give the answer.” Better results on logic and maths.

3. Checklist“Before answering, check: correct language? under 100 words? includes a link?”

4. Ask first“If the request is unclear, ask one short question instead of guessing.” Great for chatbots.

5. Fill the templateGive an exact skeleton (headings or JSON keys) and ask the model to fill it in.

You can combine patterns. A support bot might use a persona, a checklist and the “ask first” rule together. In Agentic AI Part 1 you can see how these same ideas become the instructions for AI agents.

Testing your prompts (a tiny evaluation)

Changing a prompt can fix one case and quietly break three others. The professional habit is to keep a small test set: a list of inputs with the answers you expect. Every time you edit a prompt, run all the tests and compare scores. Smarter models need fewer tricks, but they still cannot guess your audience, format or business rules. Clear instructions, context and examples are useful with every model.
</details>
<details>
What is the difference between the system and developer role?

Both hold the app’s rules. OpenAI’s newer APIs call it
developer
(and still accept
system
), Claude uses a
system
parameter and Gemini uses
system_instruction
. The idea is the same.
</details>
<details>
How many few-shot examples should I use?

Start with 2–5 varied examples. Add more only if your tests show the format is still unstable, because every example costs tokens on every call.
</details>
<details>
Should I write prompts in English?

Instructions in English usually work best, but you can ask for answers in Hindi or any other language. Just say so clearly, for example “Reply in simple Hindi”.
</details>
<details>
Do I need special words like “please” or “you are an expert”?

Politeness does not hurt, but it is not magic. A role helps when it sets real expertise and tone. Clear task, context and format matter much more.
</details>
<details>
Can prompt engineering stop prompt injection completely?

No. Roles and delimiters make attacks harder, but you also need input checks, output checks and limited permissions. We cover this in Part 25 on guardrails.
</details>

Conclusion

You now know the prompt engineering basics that matter most in real projects: use message roles correctly, build prompts from the six building blocks, write clear and specific instructions, separate data with XML tags, teach formats with few-shot examples, keep prompts in templates, and test every change. These habits work with OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and open models alike, and they are the foundation for everything that comes next, from RAG to AI agents.

Missed the setup?
